Evaluation Of Gothic Horror
To finalise my project I will now conclude how the project went for me. Firstly, I very much enjoyed the project 'Gothic Horror' overall. It was an exciting and new part of the course which I extremely enjoyed both parts to the project. I enjoyed researching for Gothic Horror and found out a lot about Victorian times through this. It was interesting learning about history within the project. I felt that learning about 'moment moris' and 'death masks' really interesting as I didn't know anything about these gothic elements to gothic history. I found the practical side of the project really inspiring too. I hadn't worked with prosthetics before so found this a really great insight to learning more about this. I found inspiration of Great Expectations quite a challenge as I had to choose a look which I would be able to recreate in the second part for the continuity assessment. I found this was really down to making sure I took the same steps to the first look and practice really helped me to make the look more exact for the second assessment. I found that listing everything on a detailed face chart helpful as well as writing a step by step guide as well as for hair. I found a few challenges when it came to hair for practicing for Miss Haversham as I didn't want the look to be too well put together but I did want structure and not a big mess! I overcame some difficulties by adding a hair extension to the look. But I found that overtime and practicing the look I wanted to create really helped when it came to designing my final Miss Haversham look. I think the continuity aspect went well too; when I look back at both images for Miss H I am really happy with the similarities of both photos.
As for my Estella look I was really confident with the hair practice as I found a step by step guide really helpful to follow in the actual assessment. It was a look I really enjoyed creating within hair and felt it gave that romantic feel which would've been a typical style in the late Victorian times. I liked the structured look but it did look light and flowy with curls at the same time. As for makeup I was restricted a little as the makeup Estella was a young and fresh faced beauty, I decided to take the time on making her skin look dewy and glowing and making the eyes and lips very minimal but pretty and natural.
Then as the second part of the project started I found the brief a little confusing to start with. I hadn't watched many horror linked TV series before so struggled to choose one to fit in with my Claudia/Quentin/Miss Ladderman series. I do however find the stories within the Claudia and Quentin scenario interesting and found you can really experiment and think outside of the box with it all. I really loved having freedom and independence with models and locations to shoot with with these characters. I chose to use True Blood as my TV series and I felt characters could relate really well to the ones in our mini series. I did my presentation but Sharron felt the characters I chose were a little too similar so I went away in the easter break and changed a few things which I had in my presentation. I found it fun shooting with a male model as I haven't used a male for my shoots yet. Using shading and working with structure in a males features is quite interesting too. I found the Quentin shoot went really well and my model had the right structured face and expressions I wanted to show when creating this character for Quentin. I also liked the styling using different leathers to use on him. I did use a little prosthetics too on his arm which I was pleased with. As for Claudia; I found it hard to get a model who I was visioning for Claudia, she's a character who I wanted to look quite innocent with an evil side. I felt the location I chose was a good choice but the lighting wasn't particularly great for the day of the shoot unfortunately. I liked the makeup aspect of Claudia and enjoyed designing this. I liked the way I did her 'polka straight' hair too for Claudia. Miss Ladderman's shoot was also fun and I curled her hair to make it all big and bouncy. I then used a large feline flick and darkish smokey eye, I added lashes with liquid eyeliner on the bottom of the lashes to elongate the appearance of the lashes in the photos. I was really disappointed with how the photos for this shoot turned out as they were a little blurry. I feel my photography isn't as strong as I want it to be and I struggle with camera settings sometimes which I really want to change over the summer! I want to be able to have crisp professional images to compliment the make up and hair design which I'm proud of. Overall I found the project both challenging and enjoyable, I hope to go back to using prosthetics at some point to perfect my skills and have a larger range of knowledge I found the history part really memorable of this project and feel a little spooked out myself by thinking about gothic ideas! I'm thankful for using continuity to be aware of this for industry practice and I want to further my ideas and think even more outside of the box for my characters next time.

A Little About: True Blood
True Blood is a TV series set in a small town of Louisiana in America. The TV series includes a sequel of drama including characters of different species including vampires, fairies, humans and werewolves. Sookie Stackhouse is the main character in the series who can hear what people are thinking. She is a fairy who attracts vampires. She is a normal (girl next door) who is a waitress at a local bar. I've watched a few episodes as research and found that Sookie's persona really stood out to me. Because she is a strong independent female it made me think of how she relates to Claudia in our C & Q brief.
The first episode I watched showed how Sookie is quite a vulnerable character who gets herself into difficult situations when it comes to romance. She meets a vampire who she wants to have a romance with but soon realises he could be bad news. This reminded me of Claudia's romance with Quentin as it is a little unhealthy as it is an imaginary relationship. On the other hand; Tara, Sookie's best friend reminded me of Miss Ladderman in our mini series as she is a strong independent woman who takes everything in her own stride. She is very opinionated and usually has an answer to everything. She has men falling for her all the time but she will not have any of it as she is so independent. I want my Miss L to come accross this way. It reminds me of how Miss L has influences Claudia too.

Conclusion (Miss H and Estella)
To conclude the Gothic Horror project for Miss Haversham and Estella I would say I’ve definitely enjoyed learning new skills and getting more creative. I loved the aspect of working with prosthetics within this project; it’s a skill I have not undertaken before and found this really interesting and brought out my more creative side. From the start of the unit I felt well prepared with research as I had read ‘Great Expectations’ and further watched the BBC series too, this made me feel more confident with the story line with being able to prepare and create my characters Estella and Miss Haversham. In our practical lessons we used techniques such as scaring, cuts, bruises, abrasions, theatrical aging, blocked out teeth etc so I fully got a more in depth feel for prosthetics. In our hair sessions we were able to collect different styles from Victorian times, these included early, mid and late Victorian styles. We then were able to create our own interpretation of Estella and Miss Haversham through hair and makeup and even styling. I chose for Miss Haversham to be a more theatrical character which could also be used on a TV setting. I used theatrical ageing quite heavily when it came to wrinkles on the face. As for hair I tried to make it pretty tame with a dandruff appearance on the roots of the hair using dry shampoo. I designed the hair to be a late Georgian style/early Victorian as this is when Miss Haversham would’ve been getting married before getting jilted at the alter. I incorporated a hair piece into the hair using techniques such as braiding, backcombing, curling and pin curling. I was pleased with the hair and really pleased with the facial makeup I’d created first time around. I then 2 weeks later did the exact same look on the same model for a continuity shoot. I was pleased with the outcome but felt the ageing wasn’t completely exact to the first shoot. The hair I was also pleased with how it turned out quite similar to the first shoot. It really made me aware of how continuity is so important and why you should follow the same steps each time you do makeup for e.g. film/TV. I then felt my Estella outcome was a positive outcome too. I really liked the hair aspect of this design. I got to be really free with the hair and I loved the outcome which was really romantic and curly just like late Victorian styles were. The makeup was a little more simple and very plain as I didn’t want to over do this as Estella in my mind is a natural fresh beauty. Overall I really enjoyed this part of the project and felt I have been able to explore my creativity within this unit. I hope to continue to practice special effects. I’m looking forward to the next part of the project too (Claudia and Quentin) so I can really push my boundaries with my work.
Miss Ladderman Practice
Today I decided to practice a strong makeup look for Miss Ladderman. My Miss L relates to 'Tara' from True Blood. She is a very 'sassy' 'independent' character who is a little intimidating in the show. In my series I wanted this to show. So I've put together a makeup look which is still girlie but well put together to reflect Tara.
The look includes a strong smokey eye, long lashes with lots of mascara and a pink girlie lip, the look is flirty but is quite structured with a elongated flick.
The lip colour I've chosen is 'Pink Neuveu' by MAC, its a satin finish which I think should show up really nicely in photography.
Developing Claudia Makeup
Today I took the time to practice my final Claudia makeup design. After deciding how her characters personality is going to be I decided on what makeup look I wanted to achieve. Because she is an innocent character who is troubled I feel I want to show this through my design, styling and hair. I practiced the makeup look on myself to make it easier for shoot day to know exactly what I am doing.
Firstly after applying a base, eye look including a winged liner flick I started to add accessories to the face to make them sparkle. I added stars onto the temples to resemble her stress being covered. Temples are a place which pain can be caused during stress leading headaches, the stars are meant to be an ironic piece which show Claudias masking of stress. She lives in a fantasy like world which has been quite sheltered as she does not see much from the outside world.
I then got experimenting a little as I wanted to include a bite mark or bruise to Claudia's face. I started to build up the bruise with yellow, red, purple and a little black from the supra colour palette. I pattered these in with my fingers and a brush but decided to add some liquid latex on top to give more texture to the look. I then figured that a bit mark wouldn't usually appear on the cheek bone but decided to practice my technique for tomorrows shoot anyway. I manipulated the liquid latex into shape using a spatula to rub away the parts I wanted to conceal. I then added a little fake blood to this, I like the idea of a bite mark as my Quentin is a vampire character, but definately want to move this bite mark for my actual shoot onto the cheek or onto the neck.
I wanted to see if a cut on the arm would match with my Claudia for the shoot but have decided I want to keep my Claudia simple with just a bite mark as I don't want the prosthetics in my shoot to be too overpowering with loads of blood.
I much prefer this subtle bite mark appearance I've now created and will take this into consideration for tomorrows shoot on my model for my Claudia character. I'm happy with how I've learnt from todays experiments. I will also move the placement of this bite next time! I'm looking forward to the shoot and will take my practice into consideration.

I then added a precise bold lip and sparkles underneath her eyes as my Claudia is a fairy, resembling Sookie from True Blood. I liked the way the sparkles were almost see through but would show up when the light hits it. It gives Claudia a feel of innocence as if she can do no wrong when really she can be a manipulative character.

I dabbed away some of the excess blood and decided to rub away some of the bite marks to make the bite more realistic.
